Fair Frame

 "WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society" – that's the theme for Women's Month, and it really made me think. It's not just about celebrating women, but about how everyone needs to work together. The "WE" part is super important. It's like saying, "Hey, this isn't just a women's problem." It's a problem for all of us.

I used to think gender equality was just about women getting the same jobs as men. But it's way bigger than that. It's about making sure everyone feels like they belong. If women don't have equal chances, then society misses out on their ideas and talents. It's like trying to build a house with only half the bricks. It just won't work.   

What I also learned is that not all women have the same experiences. Some women face even more challenges because of their race, or where they come from, or if they have a disability. So, being inclusive means understanding those differences and making sure everyone has a fair shot.

This theme isn't just words. We need to actually do stuff. We need to speak up when we see something unfair, and support policies that promote equality. It’s about building a community where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued. It's about remembering that true strength comes from unity, and that we're all in this together..

Let's explore the vibrant culture of Vigan!

Kannawidan Ilocos festival is the commemoration of the foundation of the province of Ilocos Sur. This festival is very significant to every resident in the province as they are celebrating the foundation of Ilocos Sur as a province by virtue of the Royal Decree signed on February 2, 1818.

It is the Ilocanos’ way of giving thanks to the Almighty not only for the bountiful blessings but also for the rich heritage of the province, including the close family ties among the Ilocanos.

It is a tradition that during the opening of the festival, there is usually a mass held at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. It is followed by a procession of the Patron Saints of the 40 parishes and images of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary around Vigan City. DepEd Officials of the province usually join the mass and the procession. This event showcases the deep-rooted religiosity of the Ilocanos.

The festival pays more attention on Ilocano children. It is because Ilocano culture are not recognized by the younger generations of the province. But instead, there is more on modern dances.

With this kind of endeavor, Ilocano children may appreciate their rich culture and tradition. That is why this Festival is conducted.A lso on the opening day of the festival, a traditional ritual is performed by the students of Ilocos Sur.

This year, there are different contests that focus to the ability and skills of the students which include traditional tribal rituals, choir, traditional and folk dances. The Kannawidan Ilocos Festival encourages the younger generations to learn the indigenous songs and dances of the province of Ilocos Sur.

Valentines day is an occasion celebrated during the 14th of february, some people celebrate this day as a couple, friends, or as a family. Celebrating valentines day is not just for those people who have a partner, but also but also for all of us to enjoy and also celebrate it with our families, friends and all of our loved ones. By doing or giving simple things to them that makes them happy, and seeing them appreciate those things even in the simplest way can really make us happy, proud and make our heart's flatter. It shows that we truly value our love for them and that they can feel the importance of being loved by us. 

As we celebrate the valentines day, it's not just about

giving or receiving gifts from someone, it's about the love and genuine feelings that we show to them and how we treat them.

Remember, it is not necessary that we should always be the one who's always willing to be a giver. Our feelings needs to be reciprocated genuinely, and purely without the feelings of being unwanted.

It is important for us to understand the true meaning of this occasion, to significantly and deeply help us to dig deeper and to better understand why we should celebrate this kind of occasion every year. Going out with our families, friends and loved ones is one of the most important and happiest things you've ever experience and nothing can change the fact that we can feel enjoyment when we're around them.

A tiring, yet awesome journey :)

Let's recap...

During the third quarter, I learned a lot in ict, I also discovered a lot of different tags especially in html frames, nested list, ordered list, unordered list and many others, as well as community-based research or CBR. I learned a lot in cbr, like helping my group to make code for our homepage in our research, I know I struggled a little bit and it was not that easy to fix the codes because we had to do research just to fix our little coding problems but we managed it as a team.

One of the problems or challenges I faced was managing my time at school such as doing research and at the same time the piles of assignments or reviewing for our quiz the next day, I had a hard time figuring it out. For instance, another part of my problems in ict while doing our research was sacrificing going to my classmate's house for a few days to finish our research early even though at that time I was feeling tired. But in those days, I knew I had to do that for my studies and to improve my grade.

Even though I went through that, I overcame it with dedication and being a responsible student. I learned that having time management is very important and helped me a lot to overcome the challenges I faced in the third quarter.

Moving on, I will try my best to improve what I learned in the third quarter and I will try to expand my knowledge so that I can learn more and sharpen my mind. Because I know that in the future I can use them to help me in what I do, I also learned that the problems and challenges in life strengthen our will to keep fighting.

Exploring the history of vigan (blog #3)

Vigan, Then & Now.

Vigan is the finest place in the Philippines where time has stood still as it brings you back to the Spanish era with its every exquisite architecture. History and culture lie beneath each of those brick cream and gray walls that have been carefully preserved and maintained. It has been the living proof of Spanish colonialism which has withstood wars and climatic occurrences since 16th century. It was home for chivalrous heroes of the Philippine history. Diego and Gabriela Silang were probably the most notable among them. 

Facing the South China Sea, Vigan was an island which was formerly separated from the mainland. Three rivers surround the island: the Abra River, the Govantes River, and the Mestizo River. It is named after the giant taro trees called "Bigaa" which are common along the riverbanks of the Mestizo River. The Spanish conquistador Juan De Salcedo was the one who named the place. It is a nine-hour bus ride north of Manila. The trip may be a little tiring but

witnessing the serenity of the roads to Vigan and the city itself will definitely ease the boredom brought by the stretch. There a lot of things to see in its ever corner that will make all cameras stand by for a number of pictures to be taken. The fifth class city does not only boasts its sturdy historical edifices and houses but also its amusing feasts and celebrations, one-of-a-kind arts and crafts, exotic delicacies, and remarkable attractions. It is home to the Philippine's best-tasting longganisa, bagnet, and empanada that will surely leave you wanting for more.

Local and foreign experts describe Vigan as a "place like no other". Its uniqueness lies in its historic townscape which is an architectural blend of Asian, European and Latin American influences. Being the only surviving colonial town in the country, Vigan has more strung along the narrow streets of the old Mestizo District, popularly known in the olden days as Kasanglayan (Chinese Quarters). 

Located in the Northern part of the Philippines, Vigan is 408 kilometers northwest of Manila and includes area of the China Sea as a buffer zone on the western side of the town.

Vigan, earlier known as" Ciudad Fernandina" from 1758 to late 19th century, is the oldest surviving Spanish colonial city in the country. It has auspiciously escaped the bombs of World War II unlike its sister cities, Manila and Cebu. How and why it has survived the wrath of war is a fascinating story on its own.

Vigan brings images of antiquated houses, cobbled narrow streets, calesas and friendly faces peering out of large windows; a place where "time stood still". Yet, despite all the romantic images this place provokes, much is still unfamiliar about Vigan.

The name came from the Ilocano word "kabiga-an" pertaining to the plant "biga" abounds. Biga is a tuberous plant (alocadia indica) that once grew along the banks of its rivers.

Vigan was once a thriving center for trade and commerce among the people of Ilocandia and the Cordilleras. It is situated at the delta of the Abra River (now the Mestizo and Govantes Rivers) going to the South China Sea. This position at the mouth of the river most probably afooded its existence as it was a fluvial harbor connected to the China Sea, making trade possible with other islands and with China.

Today, Vigan was recently included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List on December 1999 and converted into a component city last January 21, 2001. In partnership with the government of Spain, the Vigan Master Plan is in the process for the revitalization of the historic Vigan.

This time next year, I'll be livin' so good~ (blog #2}

 A new chapter?

As the new year begins, I am committed to embracing positive change and personal growth. The start of a new year offers a fresh slate, and I am determined to make the most of it by becoming a better version of myself. I have reflected on my past habits and choices, particularly in me, being in my lover girl era. I've realized that I've often found myself chasing after connections where my feelings weren't reciprocated, leading to disappointment and heartache. I'm now accepting the fact that I will no longer chase people who consistently give me mixed signals or lead me on. I've learned that engaging in prolonged 'talking stages' without clear commitment or reciprocation only leads to disappointment and heartache. From now on, I will move on from situations where my feelings aren't reciprocated and prioritize my own peace of mind and focus on building a fulfilling life for myself. This year, I'm making a conscious decision to prioritize my own well-being and no longer pursue anything that is connected to loving someone that leave me feeling undervalued or unfulfilled. I have learned my lesson that if they really want you, they will make it clear for you, i swear. For now, I'm choosing my peace of mind and focusing on myself more this year.

One of the key areas I plan to improve is my personal habits and discipline. In the past, I have struggled with procrastination and inconsistent routines. This year, I am committed to managing my time more effectively by creating daily schedules and setting realistic goals. I will prioritize productivity by limiting distractions and staying focused on tasks that contribute to my personal growth. Developing these habits will not only help me achieve academic success but also build a stronger work ethic, empowering me to achieve my personal and professional goals.

Another essential aspect of my self-improvement journey is focusing on my health and well-being. I understand that physical health plays a significant role in personal success. Therefore, I will commit to regular exercise, a balanced diet, and proper sleep habits. Additionally, I plan to focus on my mental health by practicing mindfulness and stress management techniques. Taking care of both my body and mind will give me the energy and clarity needed to stay motivated throughout the year and navigate the challenges that come my way.

This year, I am also determined to strengthen my relationships with family and friends. I will make a conscious effort to communicate more openly, show appreciation, and be present in my interactions. By improving my relationships, I can build a stronger support system and create meaningful connections. Being kinder, more patient, and understanding will help me become a better person in my community and foster deeper, more fulfilling connections with those I cherish.

This year, presents a perfect opportunity for me to change and improve. I am committed to developing better habits, prioritizing my health, and nurturing positive relationships. This journey of self-improvement will not always be easy, but I am determined to stay consistent and focused. With each step forward, I will become a stronger, wiser, and more positive version of myself. New year, new me – and I am ready to embrace it.

A wonderful core memory to keep (blog #1)

 how i spent my Christmas Vacation...

During the Christmas holidays, I had a wonderful time with my family. We gathered as  a whole to celebrate the christmas eve, i love how we spent the night being happy and very enjoyable night ever!  One of the highlights of our vacation was our trip to Baguio, after the christmas eve, we decided to wake up early in the morning and prepare our things because we're going to stay there overnight. It was my second time visiting the city, since me and my papa already visited the city a year ago when i was 13 years old, and I was very excited.

We traveled together as a family, and the trip itself was already fun, me and my cousins enjoyed a lot and we played a music during our trip that makes it even more special! When we arrived in Baguio, the weather was cold, which made the holiday feel even more special. We visited famous places like Burnham Park and Mines View Park. We also enjoyed delicious foods, like strawberry icecream, strawberry tanghulu, and especially the strawberry taho and ube jam.

We also went to my favorite place wich is the starwberry farm. We did a srawberry picking with my cousins, and guess what? I harvested the most strawberries and my cousins are jelous haha.  

Spending time with my family made the trip unforgettable. We laughed, took pictures, and made great memories together. It was a perfect way to celebrate Christmas. I am thankful for the time we shared, and I look forward to more holidays like this in the future.

2nd Quarter (REFLECTION) blog#5

 My Journey into Coding, Challenges, Growth, and Future Goals.

The second quarter has been an incredible journey of learning and discovery, especially as we delved into the world of coding. At first, the idea of coding felt intimidating and completely foreign to me. I had no idea how to write even the simplest lines of code. However, as we tackled lessons on the use of HTML tags and other coding concepts, my understanding and confidence gradually improved.

a. What are the learning/discoveries that I have gained?

Through these lessons, I learned how to structure web pages using HTML. I discovered how to use various tags to create headings, paragraphs, links, and images, as well as how to organize content effectively. This quarter also taught me that coding is not just about writing lines of code but about problem-solving and creativity. Moreover, I realized the importance of attention to detail, as even a small error can affect the entire output.

b. What are the problems/challenges that I have encountered?

One of the main challenges I faced was under HTML tags. standing and memorizing the syntax of HTML tags. At first, it felt overwhelming to remember which tags to use and how to apply them correctly. Another issue was debugging errors in my code. Whenever something didn’t work as expected, I found it frustrating to pinpoint the problem.

c. How did I address these challenges?

To overcome these challenges, I practiced consistently. I made it a point to review and rewrite codes from our lessons, which helped reinforce my understanding. I also sought help from classmates and our teacher whenever I got stuck. They provided guidance and explained concepts in ways that made them easier to grasp. Additionally, I used online resources and tutorials to deepen my knowledge and solve coding errors.

d. Moving on, I will…

Moving forward, I will continue to practice coding and explore more advanced topics beyond what we’ve learned. I plan to create small projects to apply my skills and build my confidence further. I will also be more proactive in asking questions and seeking feedback to improve continuously. Finally, I aim to develop a growth mindset, embracing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.

This quarter has shown me that learning coding is not as daunting as it seemed at first. With patience, persistence, and curiosity, I can achieve more than I initially believed possible.

• RA 9262: Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004

 

RA 9262 is a landmark legislation that specifically addresses violence against women and their children (VAWC), covering physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse. This law recognizes such violence as a public crime, enabling any concerned individual to report offenses even without the direct participation of the victim. It also provides various forms of relief, including protection orders, which offer immediate and long-term security to survivors.

 The law is significant because it challenges the normalization of domestic violence in Filipino society, empowering victims to break free from cycles of abuse. It also ensures access to essential services, such as counseling, legal assistance, and temporary shelters. By addressing violence within familial and intimate relationships, RA 9262 sends a powerful message about the need for gender equality and the protection of human rights.

   While RA 9262 focuses on violence within private relationships, the Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313) addresses harassment in public and digital spaces. This law criminalizes acts of gender-based harassment such as catcalling, wolf-whistling, misogynistic slurs, and cyberbullying. It holds individuals accountable for their behavior, whether in physical spaces or online, and mandates local government units, private establishments, and digital platforms to ensure safe environments for everyone, particularly women.

   RA 11313 is a critical step forward in recognizing the evolving nature of violence. It acknowledges that harassment is not confined to traditional spaces and can occur in social media, where anonymity often emboldens perpetrators. By providing legal recourse for online harassment and establishing penalties for offenders, this law ensures that women are protected from threats like cyberstalking and digital exploitation.

 Moreover, RA 11313 promotes a culture of accountability and respect. It encourages bystander intervention and collective responsibility in combating harassment. By doing so, it aligns with the campaign’s goal of eradicating violence against women and fostering an environment where everyone can live with dignity and freedom from fear.

A Holistic Approach to Ending Violence Against Women

  Both RA 9262 and RA 11313 represent a comprehensive approach to addressing violence against women. While the former provides protection within private and domestic settings, the latter ensures safety in public and online spaces. Together, these laws reflect the Philippine government’s commitment to creating a society where women can thrive without fear of violence or discrimination.

  The 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women serves as a timely reminder of the need to uphold and strengthen these laws. It calls for continued education on recognizing and reporting abuse, as well as fostering a culture of accountability and respect.  Elpidio Rivera Quirino (Tagalog: [kiˈɾino]; November 16, 1890 – February 29, 1956) was a Filipino lawyer and politician who served as the 6th President of the Philippines from 1948 to 1953.

A lawyer by profession, Quirino entered politics when he became a representative of Ilocos Sur's 1st district from 1919 to 1922. He was then elected as a senator from 1925 to 1935. In 1934, he became a member of the Philippine Independence Commission that was sent to Washington, D.C., which secured the passage of Tydings–McDuffie Act to the United States Congress. In 1935, he was also elected to the 1935 Constitutional Convention that drafted the 1935 Philippine Constitution for the newly established Philippine Commonwealth. In the new government, he served as secretary of the interior and finance under the cabinet of President Manuel L. Quezon.

After World War II, Quirino was elected vice-president in the April

1946 presidential election, consequently the second and last for the Commonwealth and first for the Third Republic. After the death of incumbent President Manuel Roxas in April 1948, he succeeded to the presidency. He won a full term under the Liberal Party ticket, defeating Nacionalista former president José P. Laurel as well as fellow Liberalista and former Senate President José Dira Avelino.

The Quirino administration was generally challenged by the Hukbalahap, who ransacked towns and barrios. Quirino ran for president again in November 1953 but was defeated by Ramon Magsaysay in a landslide.

 Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan at Parangalanan

PHILSCA celebrates the Indigenous Peoples Month and the 27th Year Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) Commemoration from October 1-30 with the theme “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalana.” (Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge). This momentous event is led by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).

2024 National Children's Month Celebration (blog #1)

 "Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines."

In this age of modern computer technology, the Internet and the ubiquitous gadgets that are already in the hands of many children, there is a felt need for parents to be trained on how to recognize red flags when something is amiss in this area of parenting, the better to take timely or preventive measures.

The council also called for a unified approach to Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC), pointing out that government officials, parents, families, communities, and media influencers must work together to ensure that children’s rights are respected and upheld at all times.

The action plan will feature a multi-sectoral, rights-based approach aimed at progressively advancing children’s rights to survival, development, protection, and participation across the Philippines.

This November, government offices and schools will once again cite and reiterate the 10 key children’s rights, which are the fundamental right to life and identity, family, education, development, food, shelter, leisure, protection from abuse and violence, a peaceful community, governmental assistance and expression.

  A report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Philippines, Framing the Human Narrative of Migration in the Context of Climate Change: A Preliminary Review of Existing Evidence in the Philippines, identified farmers and fisherfolks, women, older persons, and the urban poor as the most vulnerable to climate impacts due to slow and rapid onset events, physical constraints to move, and low capacities to adapt.

The report particularly sheds light on the state of environmental migration in the Philippines, engaging the cities of Manila, Malabon, Iloilo, and Davao, as well as Samar Province, in the community consultations conducted for this report. The areas were selected due to their high exposure and vulnerability to climate impacts.

 

Jerome Ilagan, Chief of the CCC Policy Research and Development Division, said that “This is a long fight against the climate crisis. All institutions must unite and have the collective resolve to really ensure that across generations, we create champions from the communities. Our government is all prepared in terms of policy and programming support mechanisms and this IOM study is a policy-support decision tool. We know that the road towards resilience may be long and bumpy, but if we are together knowing that our mission is to make sure that no one is left behind, we will survive and thrive in this era of climate change.”

 

The report defined an environmental migrant as “persons or groups of persons who, predominantly for reasons of sudden or progressive change in the environment that adversely affects their lives or living conditions, are obliged to leave their habitual homes, or choose to do so, either temporarily or permanently, and who move either within their country or abroad.” It also provided an initial framework for in-depth policy research on climate migration, building on the existing evidence on migration and climate change in the Philippines strengthened by interviews with local governments and vulnerable sectors and communities who have been impacted.

Reflection on First Quarter

 Embracing Change

Throughout the beginning of the school year, I discovered the importance of effective communication and collaboration in both academic and social settings. I learned how to express my thoughts clearly and actively listen to others, which helped me build stronger relationships with my classmates. Additionally, I gained insights into the value of setting goals and developing a growth mindset, which motivated me to push through difficult tasks and strive for improvement.

One of the main challenges I faced was adjusting to the increased workload and complexity of the material compared to previous years. I found it difficult to keep up with assignments and prepare for tests, especially in subjects like math, where the concepts became more advanced. I also struggled with raising my hand in class because I felt shy and scared that my answers might be wrong. Additionally, I faced challenges in group projects, as coordinating schedules and ideas with classmates proved difficult.

To address these challenges, I implemented a study schedule that allowed me to allocate specific times for each subject, ensuring I stayed on track with my assignments. I reached out to my teachers for help when I didn't understand certain topics, which made a significant difference. For group projects, I took the initiative to organize our meetings and set clear goals for each session, improving our collaboration.

Moving forward, I will continue to refine my time management skills and seek help whenever I encounter difficulties. I plan to be more proactive in group projects by encouraging open communication among team members. Additionally, I want to explore extracurricular activities related to my interests, such as joining a club or participating in volunteer work, to further develop my skills and make new connections. Overall, I aim to maintain a positive attitude and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
